Summer can change how the skin feels and there are many products or techniques which can keep skin healthy and glowing for this warmer season.

A skincare routine can be simple, involving just a couple of products such as cleanser and moisturizer. Some people like the pampering of complicated rituals, whilst others find that one or two specialist products can make a real difference to how skin looks and feels. Warmer or humid summer air, hot sun and a change in diet can all influence how skin feels but there are many ways to keep summer skin radiant.

Hay Fever:

This irritating allergic condition has an effect on the skin around the eyes and nose. Constantly blowing the nose and wiping eyes can lead to sore, chapped or dehydrated skin. Other allergies such as eczema can also flare up when hay fever starts.

  • If skin is sensitive or prone to other allergies then be careful about which brands are used. Try new products before buying and seek expert advice about which ranges are safe to use with allergies in mind.
  • Chapped and dehydrated skin will sting when product is applied. This is because the surface of the skin is sore, rather than being the result of an allergic reaction. Balms can help to minimize this and repair skin. Try Ren Mayday Mayday Rescue Balm which contains pre-biotics for skin health as well as naturally soothing plant actives.
  • Minimize make-up if eyes are itchy and puffy. Anything which might irritate further such as a kohl pencil or glitter eye shadow is to be avoided. Keep make-up on the skin gentle and lightweight; mineral make-up or tinted moisturizers are ideal.

Hot Weather:

This can make even dry skin types shine, and will often cause an excess of oil to be produced.

  • Use a good cleanser to make skin feel cleaner, but remember that this excess oil production is the body's way of protecting the skin, so never use anything stripping. Oily to normal skins will find that a gentle cleansing wash makes the skin feel fresh. For excessively dry or mature skins, a cleansing oil or balm provides a deep clean without over-cleansing. In all cases be careful to take make-up off in order to avoid blocked pores.
  • If a greasy feeling persists, then swap to oil free or mineral make-up products. Many oil-free products leave the skin slightly matte and help to minimize shine. Consider using a light dusting of translucent setting powder after foundation but do not use too much make-up as skin will start to feel thickly coated and uncomfortable.
  • Try a lighter moisturizer. Thick creams which protect the skin from the wind and cold become too heavy for summer wear. Oily skins can look for a hydrating oil free moisturizer whilst normal to dry skins will feel comfortable with a slightly lighter textured cream than in winter.
  • Thirsty or dehydrated skin can stay smooth and supple by using hydrating waters and gel serums under a lighter moisturizer rather than going for anything heavy.
  • Try using an oil, serum or gel overnight rather than a cream; this lets skin breathe.

General Tips:

  • Drinking plenty of water is a well known way to keep skin clear and fresh but this is even more important in hot weather. Eating fruits and vegetables will help as will getting the right oils and proteins from a healthy diet.
  • An SPF is a must for everyone. There are many lightweight and non-chemical formulas now on the market to investigate.
  • A clay mask will keep oily skins clean and tighten pores. Use once a week or as directed.
  • Remember to exfoliate to keep skin clean and smooth but do not use a scrub over sunburn or sore skin.
