Stretch marks appear on various parts of the body and may be caused by many different things. Both men and women get stretch marks and they can start to appear on the body as early as the teen years. What are stretch marks and exactly what causes them? Once one has them how can they get rid of them? This guide to all things stretch marks will answer these frequently asked questions.

What are Stretch Marks and What Causes Them?

Stretch marks usually show up on the skin in the form of red or purple scar-like marks. Stretch marks appear when the skin is stretched so much that it loses elasticity. Tiny bleeding occurs along those traumatized skin tissues giving them their purple hue. These marks heal and become scars and may or may not lose their purple color.

Stretch marks usually appear on areas of the body that have grown too fast. Women who are pregnant may get them on their stomachs. Weightlifters tend to get them on their arms where their muscles have grown quickly. Teenagers may also get them as they grow taller and people who gain a lot of weight at once may find them in areas of excess fat.

Can Stretch Marks be Prevented?

To some extent stretch marks can be prevented, although not completely. How? First, eat a healthy protein rich diet and drink lots of water to keep skin hydrated and elastic. Regular exercise will also help keep stretch marks off of the skin.

Use a stretch mark cream made up of cocoa butter and vitamins A and E in areas that are likely to get stretch marks. This is especially important for pregnant women. Pregnant women should also try to control their weight gain during pregnancy to avoid stretch marks.

How Can One Treat or Remove Stretch Marks They Already Have?

There are many ways to treat or remove stretch marks. Stretch mark creams are the least expensive way. They may fade the look of stretch marks, but they won’t get rid of them completely. Chemical peels can also be used on stretch marks. A small amount of acid is used to strip away the top layer of skin leaving stretch marks less noticeable.

Laser stretch mark removal is another option, but probably the most expensive one. Laser removal is a surgical procedure that is done by a dermatologist or an esthetician working under a doctor. Up to 10 laser treatments may be needed to completely rid the skin of stretch marks. The laser targets the areas where the stretch marks are and stimulate the growth of new skin cells. Results may take up to six months to be final, but they are well worth it.

Is There a Natural Remedy for Stretch Marks?

There are no natural ways to get rid of stretch marks, but one can naturally prevent them by maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine.

Stretch mark treatments and removal options may be expensive, but if one is very bothered by their appearance, the results are worth the money.

I am only 16 and yet I have stretch marks from weight gain and then weight loss. They used to bother me terribly but I have learned to accept them and I keep them reduced with Bio-Oil and Cocoa butter which I rub into them every night.
