Summer skincare essentials go beyond sunscreen. These skincare products will treat and protect from head to toe.

Summer can be a dangerous time for skin. The amount of sun exposure increases for everyone during this season. As we get busy gardening, swimming at the pool, and vacationing, there is no time left to think about skincare product needs.

The following products can be found at any department store or online beauty supply store.

Sunscreen: Of course sunscreen is a key product during summertime. It is a given to have in the house, the bag for the pool; even a travel size for the purse is a great idea. One place to never keep sunscreen is in the car or other places that are subject to extreme heat. Once sunscreen in heated it will not provide the same protection. Also, remember to look at the expiration date on the bottle; most sunscreens expire within three years. Not sure when that last bottle of sunscreen was purchased? Be on the safe side, throw it out and buy a new one!

Sun protection for Hair: Not only does the skin need to be protected, but so does the hair. Sun damage to the hair can cause frizz, split ends and breakaway, plus lead to color damage for color-treated hair. Talk to the hair stylist about a product that will help prevent sun damage. Jonathan product makes a great leave-in glossing crème that has UV filters to protect hair. Put a small amount on dry hair and slick into a ponytail before heading off to the beach.

Aloe Vera Gel: Even with sunscreen applied on a regular basis, there is still a chance of getting the occasional sunburn. Aloe Vera will help ease the sting of the sunburn and start the healing process. Many lotions and gels are available for easy use or buy an Aloe Vera plant. Simply break off a leaf or part of the leaf and apply to any sunburn or cut.

Tanning Lotion: Once the skin is protected with that wonderful sunscreen, don’t go and spoil it up by going to the tanning beds or lying out in the sun. Many cosmetic companies have created sunless tanning lotions to gently and safely bronze the skin. Scared of the color? Hesitant about being able to layer it correctly on the skin? Go with a gradual tan lotion. These products are much easier to control. Personal favorite: Coppertone’s Gradual Tan; it has a wonderful scent and gives a great color. Some of the sunless tanning lotions are safe to use on the face; some are not. So be sure to read the back of the bottle before applying. If not, most likely the same company will have a product for the face as well.

Powder Bronzer: For a gentle sun-kissed look, use bronzer. Bronzer can be applied to the cheeks instead of blush, a matte bronzer can be used to contour the face, or apply a light dusting all over for a safe tan.

Coral Nail Polish: This summer the nails have to be painted a fresh coral color! It is the hottest color this year.
