Skin care for oily skin requires understanding what skin types are considered oily, and what skin care products are needed to balance the oil in the skin.

The first step in determining the best care for oily skin is to figure out if the skin is truly an oily skin type. People who have oily skin generally experience at least one of the following:

  • Shiny skin within one hour after washing the face
  • Makeup collects in the crease of the eyelids or in the smile lines of the face
  • Shine on the forehead, nose, and chin, in addition to oily cheeks
  • Acne may be present on the face and the body

People with an oily skin type are always oily, no matter the month or time of year. Often, people confuse combination skin with oily skin. While someone with an oily skin type will be oily all over the face, and often the body, a combination skin type will experience excessive oil production only in some areas. The right care for oily skin can help regulate oil production and inhibit acne growth.

Care For Oily Skin - Face Cleansers

Choosing the right cleanser for oily skin requires looking at the ingredients. A cleanser for oily skin should lather, to help the oils be removed of the face. However, sulfate ingredients can cause irritation and should be avoided. Face cleansers such as Skindinavia Shine Reducing Cleanser, which contain silica, will help control shine and absorb excess oils, while also washing away impurities. Care for oily skin requires washing the face both morning and night.

Care For Oily Skin - Oily Skin Care Treatment

For oily skin that tends to shine within an hour after washing, additional treatment, such as mattifying gels and salicylic acid oil control products can help regulate the oil production throughout the day. They should be applied after using a face cleanser and before applying moisturizer, unless specifically instructed otherwise.

Always allow the oily skin treatment product about five minutes to absorb fully into the skin. Mild to moderately oily skin should use a treatment product once per day. Moderate to severly oily skin should use a skin care treatment product twice per day. Products that contain glycolic acid should only be used in the evening and in combination with a sunscreen.

Care For Oily Skin - Moisturizing Oily Skin

Many people make the mistake of believing that oily skin does not need moisturizer. However, moisturizers provide the skin with water and hydration, which aids in balancing the skin. When skin feels too dry or tight, the oil glands, also called sebaceous glands, are stimulated into producing more oil. By using a moisturizer for oily skin, the skin is hydrated and the oil glands will remain balanced, causing the skin to produce less oil.

A complete oily skin care routine requires following the three simple steps of cleansing, treating, and hydrating. When beginning care for oily skin, it can take up to 30-40 days to see results, but over time, the skin will adjust and balance. As always, those who have been diagnosed with any skin conditions should consult with their medical professional before altering their skin care routine.
