Keep Skin Healthy and Glowing all Winter LongMoisturizing and Protecting Skin with Natural Products
Fight dry winter skin is easy using good nutrition and natural products.
When the temperatures outside drop, the itching from dry skin begins. Not only is it uncomfortable, but dry, cracked skin can leave the body open to infection. Following are some easy ways to protect the skin from the harsh winter environment using natural products. HydrateHydrate the body by drinking plenty of fluids. Healthy skin starts from the inside out. It can be difficult to remember to drink enough water in cold weather. Herbal tea and decaf coffee will help keep the body hydrated. Eating plenty of water rich foods such as fruits and fresh vegetables will help with hydration and also provide the vitamins and minerals necessary to make the skin glow. CleanseUse a more moisturizing cleanser. Many commercial soaps are similar to a harsh detergent on the skin. Consider using handmade soaps, which naturally have a higher glycerin content. Look for soaps that contain moisturizing ingredients such as goats milk, shea butter, or cocoa butter. Handmade or natural soap is widely available at health food stores and in many grocery stores in the natural food section. Wash with cooler water. Water that is too hot will dry and irritate the skin. Cooler water helps keep the moisture in the skin by keeping the pores tight. ExfoliateExfoliate hands, feet, and body to prevent rough spots. An simple way to make a good body scrub is to combine raw sugar with olive oil. Essential oils can be used with the scrub to add aromatherapy benefits. When showering, use a loofah on the body and a pumice stone on the feet to remove dead, dry skin. MoisturizeKeep lotion and lip balm handy, and use liberally. Rather than using products that are composed primarily of petroleum products, look for lotions that contain natural ingredients. They will soak into the skin more readily, and will not leave a waxy build up. For a deep treatment, use lotion on the hands and feet at night time and cover in thick socks to keep the feet soft and healthy. Use olive oil or jojoba oil for deep hair and scalp moisturizing. Use a couple tablespoons of oil, work into the scalp and through the hair. Cover with a towel and leave on for a couple of hours or overnight. SPFRemember the sunscreen. Even though the temperatures are freezing, the sun can still burn sensitive skin. Protect exposed skin with sunscreen to prevent drying and peeling. While most sunscreens contain petroleum products, there are natural alternatives. Keep Skin CoveredWear the winter gear. Skin that is directly exposed to the cold temperatures and harsh winter winds will become dry. So remember the scarf, hat, and gloves, not just for warmth, but to keep skin soft and healthy.
