Pimples are a problem that plague everyone at one time or another, but many don't know that there actually is a right and a wrong way to pop a pimple.

When a pimple appears on the face, the urge to pop can be strong, but waiting until the right time will be well worth the effort. Popping a pimple in the proper way can be very beneficial to the skin, but if done in the wrong way, it can cause disaster. Minor blemishes and pimples may end up being major skin issue. The right way and the wrong way to pop a pimple is an important distinction.

The Wrong Way

To know the right way to pop a pimple, the wrong way must be determined first. A pimple must be ready before it can be properly popped. Trying to perform an extraction on pimple that is still red and barely raised above the skin will cause more damage then good. It will drive the infection further into the skin resulting in an even bigger problem then at the start.

A pimple cannot be forced. Using too much pressure by squeezing, picking or scratching will only make it look worse then before. It could even result in scarring that can last a lifetime. Also, once a pimple is popped, the wrong clean up methods could result in the spreading of bacteria which will only turn into more pimples. A pimple needs to be taken care of in the right way.

The Right Way

Popping pimples the right way is important to the health and future of the skin. A pimple is ready for extraction when a white head has undoubtedly formed above the surface of the skin. Here is an eight step guide to the right way to pop a pimple that is ready.

  1. First and foremost, sanitize the area where the popping will take place and make sure hands are washed well with antibacterial soap and water.
  2. Wash face with warm water and a gentle facial cleanser.
  3. Prepare the pimple and the skin around it for extraction by sanitizing it with alcohol or toner. Take a little bit of alcohol or toner on a cotton ball and wipe the pimple and the skin around it.
  4. Wrap both index fingers in tissue.
  5. Place fingers on either side of the pimple in a parallel position and perform a down-and-in motion so that the skin around the pimple forms a mound with the pimple at the peak. Then rock the fingers in a back-and-fourth motion. Do not press too hard.
  6. When the pimple pops white pus will come out. Take another cotton ball dipped in alcohol or toner and wipe it off in a downward motion. This will educe the risk of spreading bacteria and the chance of re-infection.
  7. Apply a clearing acne spot treatment gel to the area.
  8. Discard all infected materials and rewash hands before touching the face again.

If the pimple does not pop during step five, do not force it any more. It is not ready. Just leave it until it is ready and try again at that time.

These seven steps are the safest way to pop a pesky pimple on one's own. If the problem is more serious, like a cyst or nodule, one should visit a dermatologist rather then trying to fix it on their own. Taking care of one's skin in the right way is vital to its health and appearance.
